Completing your Open Water Diver (OWD) Course will almost always
feel like you’ve stepped through a fantasy portal into the very intriguing diving dimension.
It will also almost always lead your brain to the question: What’s next?
The sex of sea turtle hatchlings is decided by the temperature of the sand during incubation, with warmer nests producing females and cooler nests producing males.
WHAT’S NEXT?
If your brain is already flashing AOWD signs at you, that’s understandable. It’s probably the most marketed and hence, the most popular choice. But is it the only one? No.
There’s no underwater sorting hat. No “correct” path that all divers must follow. The beauty of this sport is its wonderfully experiential nature, and your next giant stride depends entirely on what kind of fish you’re growing into.
The AOWD course is designed to help you sample the Specialty Courses that lie beyond the OWD door you just opened. Think of AOWD as a tasting platter of diving specialties: a bit of depth, a bit of navigation, maybe a night dive, maybe going click-click-shoot underwater. If you’re unsure what calls out to you, AOWD helps you explore without committing to a niche.
But what if you are already sure? What if your OWD course felt like the most easy-breezy thing? And now the curiosity of diving deeper is tugging at your heartstrings.
If that thought made you grin, Deep Diving Specialty might just be your answer! Instead of spreading your energy across five different dive skills, channel it into your calling, and sharpen that one skill with laser focus. If your interests and your report card as an OWD diver align, and together point at 40m, then the Deep Spec is no longer just a “valid” choice, it’s probably the perfect choice.
And if “one course in one dive trip” sounds more like you, that’s ok too! You can just fun dive for a few days. Or more. It’s a great way to reinforce skills learnt during OWD, and settle into the rhythm of the Ocean. Spend some underwater time with your fish friends, tune in to your buoyancy and breathing, and somewhere along the way, your next certification will click one day.
It’s important to remember that chasing courses & certifications do not guarantee growth as a diver; diving more is what makes you a better diver…
Bringing us to the point that Deep Spec is just one out of many (almost 10) course choices. The list is long. Varied as per diver interests. And honestly, very tempting. It’s easy to feel spoilt for choice. And that is precisely why AOWD becomes a go-to option for many!
In conclusion, you DO NOT have to figure all this out alone. Your DIVESchool – us, and
your Instructor will be with you every fin of the way! And help choose the pathway that
matches your comfort, curiosity, and diving style.
